What children will practise

Pick out the possessive pronoun (mine, his, hers, ours, theirs, yours) from the subject, object and possessive-adjective forms to finish sentences like This backpack is ___.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (2 points each) - Every item is ... is/are ___. with a picture of an object such as a backpack, robot, bicycle, teddy bear or treasure map - The three options are forms of one pronoun: my/mine/me, her/hers/she, our/ours/us, their/theirs/them, yours/your/you - Answers: mine (items 1 and 7), his, hers (items 3 and 8), ours (items 4 and 9), theirs (items 5 and 10), yours - A separate answer key gives each full sentence with the answer in red

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet of the unit, once my-mine, your-yours and her-hers have been taught as pairs. Allow about 10 minutes. - The pictures do not show an owner, so before starting set the rule that after is with no noun following, the word must stand on its own - After marking, play lost property: hold up a child's pencil or rubber, ask Whose is this?, and have the class answer It's mine. / It's hers.

Common sticking points

- Choosing my, her, our or their instead of mine, hers, ours or theirs, because they are more familiar, even though no noun follows - In items 3 and 8 choosing her, which children know both as an object and as a possessive adjective - In item 6 choosing your or you because they start like yours - In item 2 choosing him because it looks like his
