Before you begin
Read short everyday texts such as room signs, reminder notes, notices, calendars, menus, order slips and invitations, use the information, and write short texts of their own: a lost-property notice, a postcard, an invitation and a shop sign.
20 slides (follow the page number in the bottom-right corner), with Min and Bas touring Reader Town - Pages 1-4, signs around us: point to the school, library, post office and restaurant signs; read a note (tomorrow to the library: notebook, pencil, library card and water bottle) and circle those from ten items; trace the route to the library; fix three room signs that are on the wrong doors - Pages 5-10, reading to use information: a notice for singing practice on Friday the 12th at 09.00 at the flagpole field, then mark it on an August calendar; read a menu (fried rice 25 baht, noodles 30 baht) and write an order; choose tray ก, ข or ค to match fried rice and orange juice; find the pink bag with a bear and Min's name tag; write a lost-property notice (colour, description, last seen) - Pages 11-17, writing to communicate: a postcard to a friend, completing an unfinished meeting note, signs for a reading corner, asking politely to borrow a book, an invitation (event, day, time, place, from), answering questions from a story-reading invitation, and writing the same message as a short sign and as a message to a friend - Pages 18-20: my shop sign, a shop role-play and a class exhibition - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 1-2 unit on reading for everyday life over three lessons of about 40 minutes (pages 1-10 reading to use information, 11-17 writing to communicate, 18-20 shop and exhibition). - Before pages 4 and 9 walk the class past real signs in school, or put real items on the desk, and read each description bit by bit (colour, picture, name tag) - On pages 15-16 have children write their own invitation and swap with a partner, who must answer what, when and where; if they cannot, the invitation is missing information
- Choosing an item that matches only part of the description, such as a pink bag without Min's name tag, or the pink rabbit water bottle (page 9) - Choosing a tray with fried rice but no orange juice, or orange juice with spaghetti (page 8, trays ข and ค) - Circling tempting items that are not on the note, such as crayons, snacks or the football (page 2) - Leaving the time or place out of an invitation or meeting note
