What children will practise

Hear and produce Thai rhyming words, which share the same vowel sound and the same final consonant if there is one (ปู and หู, ดาว and ขาว), then build chains of their own, moving from single syllables to two-syllable phrases where the last word of one rhymes with the first word of the next, as in ดูดาว ขาวใส ใจดี.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides on a rhyme band stage, led by Jib the bird and Ting the drum - Slides 1-9, single syllables: five rhymes for ปู, tap out the syllables in ปู, อีกา and มะละกอ, clap when a pair rhymes (กา-นา, กา-ไก่, ปู-หู, ดู-ดาว), three rhymes each for กา and ดาว, draw something that rhymes with กา, look at the groups ดาว ขาว ยาว and จาน บ้าน หวาน, cross out the odd word (จาน บ้าน ดิน / ปู นา หู / ปู ดาว ขาว), a nine-square bingo (ตา หู จาน ดาว แมว กบ ลิง มือ ใจ), and point to pictures that rhyme with the teacher's word - Slides 10-15, longer chains: pass the mic round six children with no repeats, a two-syllable ribbon (model นั่งเรียน เขียนคัด นัดเจอ, then continue from ดูดาว), order the cards ใจดี, ดูดาว, ขาวใส, fill the middle of เที่ยวสวน __ เย็นใจ and นั่งเรียน __ นัดเจอ, draw a clue for a partner, and continue from ดูดาว two different ways - Slides 16-20, making a piece: draw a scene and write rhymes for it, read ดูดาว ขาวใส ใจดี มีสุข with a partner tapping the beat, revise one word, make a cover and perform - There are no answer slides; most tasks have several right answers

How to use it in class

Use with Years 1-2 in a rhyming unit over three lessons of about 30-40 minutes (slides 1-9, 10-15, 16-20). The work is mostly oral, so have a small drum ready or let children clap. - On slides 3 and 7 ask children to explain: กา and ไก่ start the same but have different vowels, so they do not rhyme, and ดู and ดาว share ด but do not rhyme either - Slides 8-9 need the teacher to supply the called words, such as ปลา (rhymes with ตา) or งู (rhymes with หู); end the last lesson with each pair performing their piece at the front

Common sticking points

- Treating words that start with the same consonant as rhymes, such as กา and ไก่ or ดู and ดาว (slide 3 uses these pairs as distractors) - Looking only at the final letter and deciding จาน and ดิน rhyme because both end in น (slide 7, item 1), though the vowels differ - In two-syllable chains, rhyming the new phrase with the first word of the previous one instead of its last word - Making up nonsense words just to keep the rhyme going
