Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Tell flat (2D) shapes from solids (3D), state the sides and corners of circles, triangles, squares and rectangles, see that a turned shape is still the same shape, continue repeating patterns, and name spheres, cubes, cuboids, cylinders and cones.
20 slides - Slide 2: flat shapes versus solids (circle and ball, square and cube) - Slides 3-9, 2D shapes: find the circles among seven garden pictures, a triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners whichever way it leans, add the last stick to make a square, opposite sides of a rectangular door, sort shapes into no corners, 3 corners and 4 corners, match shapes before and after turning, build a house from shapes - Slides 10-11, patterns: a circle-triangle bridge and a square-square-triangle train - Slides 12-19, 3D shapes: a sphere has a curved surface and no flat face, a tower of five cubes, a gift box as a cuboid, a cylinder has two circular bases, a cone has one point, match objects to solids (football, dice, tissue box, can, party hat), prints made by flat faces, design an imaginary city - Slide 20: four review questions - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 1-2 geometry unit over two lessons of about 30 minutes (slides 1-11 for 2D shapes and patterns, 12-20 for solids). - At slide 8 let children turn a square card themselves and ask whether it is still a square, since many will call the tilted one a diamond - At slide 18 print with real objects in paint or modelling clay, then set the 3D shapes worksheet that matches solids to objects
- Calling a tilted square a different shape (slide 8 matches shapes before and after turning) - Calling a ball a circle, mixing up circle and sphere (slide 2 and question 2 on slide 20) - Calling a cone a triangle because they see it side-on (slide 16 places a cone next to a flat triangle) - Saying a circle has one corner, or counting a corner of a square twice
