Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match eight basic shapes to their English names, then name the shape of four everyday objects.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points in total - Word bank of 8: rectangle, heart, circle, diamond, square, oval, star, triangle - Part A: write the letter A-H for 8 shapes (16 points) - Part B: choose the shape of an object from three words in 4 items (4 points): a sailing boat (triangle), a clock (circle), a window (square) and a kite (diamond) - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet of a shapes unit, once children have seen and said the names. Allow about 10 minutes. - Warm up by having children draw each shape in the air as you say it - Follow up with a classroom hunt like Part B: The door is a rectangle.

Common sticking points

- Confusing square and rectangle (items 4 and 8, and the window options in Part B) - Confusing circle and oval (items 2 and 7, and the clock options in Part B) - Calling the kite or item 6 a square, since a diamond is a square turned on its corner
