Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at each shape and copy its name correctly from an eight-word bank, then choose the first letter of four shape words.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond, star, heart - Part A: write the shape name under each picture, 8 items (16 points), in a different order from the bank, e.g. 1 star, 2 oval, 7 rectangle - Part B: choose the first letter, 4 items (4 points): _ircle (C/S/K), _quare (P/S/T), _riangle (F/D/T), _eart (H/B/M) - A separate key; its word bank shows a picture beside every word

How to use it in class

Use after the shapes spelling sheet, as here children copy whole words themselves. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children draw a small sketch beside each word in the bank, then begin Part A - After marking, children hunt the room for objects with these shapes and write object and shape side by side, e.g. clock - circle

Common sticking points

- Swapping square and rectangle in items 4 and 7, since both are four-sided - Swapping oval and circle in items 2 and 6, which share a colour and size - Part B item 1: choosing S or K, because circle starts with an s sound and its second c sounds like k - Writing the bank letter (A-H) on the line instead of the word
