Teaching guide

What children will practise

Plan a short adventure story of the child's own with a Who, Where, What happened, How did it end grid, then write it as five sentences from given starters, using past forms went, saw and felt.

What's in the worksheet

One open writing task, 20 points (no marking breakdown is printed) - A four-box plan with starters: I am..., I go to..., I see..., I feel... - The story section has a title line and five starters: One day, I went to... / I saw... / Then,... / I felt... / Finally,... - The plan uses the present tense and the story the past, so children must change the verbs themselves - The key is a model story, A Little Bird: a trip to the park, a little bird, some water, feeling happy, the bird flies away

How to use it in class

Use at the end of a narrative-writing unit, or after teaching the past simple of go, see and feel. Allow about 30-40 minutes, or split it over two lessons. - In the first part children plan in pairs, talking about where they went and what they found; check the grid before they write the story - Share the 20-point marking rule before writing, e.g. all five sentences, correct past verbs, capitals and full stops, then have children read their stories to a group

Common sticking points

- Copying the plan wholesale, e.g. One day, I went to I go to the park., or writing I see instead of I saw - Repeating the I saw line under Then, instead of adding a new event - Answering Who? with I am happy. or I am ten. instead of naming the character - Adding a second full stop, since one is already printed at the end of each line
