Before you begin
Read the story of Mia's day in her grandmother's garden and answer ten three-option questions on the day, place, objects, names, number, colour and feeling.
10 questions, 20 points - A five-sentence story: Mia visits her grandmother on Saturday, they garden together, Mia waters the flowers, her puppy Coco digs beside the carrots, after lunch she picks three red tomatoes and feels proud - Questions such as What is the puppy's name? (Max / Ben / Coco) and How many tomatoes does Mia pick? (five / one / three) - Item 10 asks about a feeling (tired / angry / proud), stated directly in the text as proud - A separate answer key ticks each answer
Use in a P1-3 reading-comprehension unit, or alongside a family or garden topic. Allow about 15 minutes. - Pre-teach proud, digs and picks, the least familiar words in the story, which items 5, 6 and 10 rely on - After marking, children draw themselves helping at home or gardening with a family member and write one sentence, e.g. I water the flowers with my grandmother.
- Item 9, Who visits the grandmother?: choosing Coco, the first option and a name from the story - Item 1: choosing Sunday, the day many children associate with visiting grandparents - Item 10: choosing tired after a day of gardening, not knowing proud - Item 7: choosing five because the basket in the picture holds more than three tomatoes
