Teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn about space, the Sun (a star that gives light and heat), Earth, the Moon and the eight planets in order from the Sun; explain that day and night come from Earth spinning, that the Moon has no light of its own and its phases come from how much of its lit side we see; and meet astronauts' equipment and spacecraft.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides at a junior space station with Fah, Mek and Robby the robot - Slides 1-6, basics: what space is (circle what is found in space), the Sun as the nearest star, Earth's water, land, air and life, the Moon orbiting Earth in about 27 days with craters, and day and night (sort activities into day or night) - Slides 7-10, planets: the eight planets with key facts, inner planets (Mercury nearest the Sun, Venus hottest, Mars red), outer planets (Jupiter largest, Saturn's rings, Uranus tilted, Neptune windiest) and an ordering game - Slides 11-14, motion: Earth spins west to east in 24 hours, orbits the Sun in a year on an ellipse, the Moon and Earth, and eight Moon phases - Slides 15-20, astronauts: spacesuit, helmet and oxygen tank, life on a space station, rockets, spacecraft and satellites, a seven-item matching review, five A-B-C questions and a certificate - There are no answer slides

How to use it in class

Use in a Year 1-3 Earth and space unit over three or four lessons of about 30 minutes (slides 1-6, 7-10, 11-14, 15-20). - At slides 6 and 11 darken the room and use a torch as the Sun and a ball as Earth; let children turn the ball themselves and see which side is lit before sorting the activities - For slide 14 ask children to look at the real Moon each night for a week and draw it, then use the Earth, Sun and Moon worksheet and the solar system worksheet

Common sticking points

- Thinking night happens because the Sun hides behind a mountain or goes round the Earth (question 3 on slide 19 offers 'the Sun goes round the Earth') - Thinking the Moon makes its own light or really changes shape (slides 5, 13 and 14 explain it reflects sunlight) - Thinking the Sun is not a star because it looks so much bigger and brighter than the others - Assuming Mercury is hottest because it is nearest the Sun, when Venus is hottest (slide 8)
