Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first letter of six sport words from pictures, then pick the correct spelling of four more sports such as karate and climbing.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Part A: choose the first letter in 6 items: _kating (s/b/r), _urfing (s/t/p), _oxing (d/b/k), _olf (t/g/s), _owling (c/r/b), _kiing (s/b/p) - Part B: pick the correct spelling in 4 items: yuga / yoga / yooga, carate / karatee / karate, climbing / climging / climbbing, fisthing / fishing / fishin - A separate key marks answers in red

How to use it in class

Use after the sports matching sheet, once children have met individual sports such as skating, surfing and skiing. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, have children say each sport aloud, stressing the opening /s/, /b/ and /g/ sounds - After marking, pair children to ask Do you like bowling? or Can you ski? using sports from the sheet

Common sticking points

- Part B item 2: choosing carate because the /k/ sound suggests c, or karatee for the long final vowel - Part B item 3: choosing climging or climbbing, not knowing the b in climb is silent - Part B item 4: choosing fishin because the final g is dropped in fast speech - Part A item 3: choosing d or k when the opening sound of boxing is unclear
