Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read o'clock times on analogue clocks and write them as English words, then work the other way and draw both hands from a digital time.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Part A: write the time in words for 8 clock faces (16 points): nine, three, twelve, six, two, ten, five and eight o'clock - There is no word box to copy from, so both the number word and o'clock are written from memory - Part B: draw the hands on 4 blank clocks (4 points) for 1:00, 4:00, 7:00 and 11:00 - A separate answer key shows both the written answers and the hand positions

How to use it in class

Use as the last step on o'clock times, after children have matched and spelt the time words. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before Part B, recap that the long hand always points to 12 and the short hand must be drawn visibly shorter - After marking, in pairs one child writes a time such as 3:00 and the other draws the hands, then both say It's three o'clock.

Common sticking points

- Clock 1 (nine) and clock 2 (three) are mirror images, so children unsure of left and right may swap them - On clock 3 both hands overlap on 12, and children may see only one hand and hesitate - In Part B children often draw both hands the same length, which makes 11:00 read like 12:55 - Leaving the apostrophe out of o'clock, or writing oclock or o clock
