Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read ten analogue clocks and draw lines to the matching time phrases A-J, from o'clock and half past to quarter past/to and minutes past and to.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Red minute hands and blue hour hands - Phrases: twenty past seven, five to eleven, quarter past three, half past two, twenty to ten, one o'clock, five past five, quarter to five, ten past six, twenty-five past eight - Three answers use to (five to eleven, twenty to ten, quarter to five); the rest use past or o'clock - A separate key: 1 F, 2 D, 3 C, 4 H, 5 G, 6 I, 7 A, 8 J, 9 E, 10 B

How to use it in class

Use once past and to have both been taught, before children choose or write times themselves. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, confirm that the red hand is the minute hand and have children sort the phrases on the right into past and to before drawing lines - After marking, have children pick three times from the sheet and say a routine sentence, e.g. I get up at quarter past six., then move on to the telling-time choose sheet

Common sticking points

- Item 4: reaching for quarter past four because the hour hand has not reached 5, though the answer is quarter to five - Item 10: mixing up the hands, as both point near 10 and 11 - Item 9: reading the red hand at 5 as twenty-five past, since this clock has two red hands - Item 3: confusion because both hands point at 3
