Before you begin
Read analogue clocks and write British-style time phrases unaided: o'clock, half past, quarter past and to, and minutes past and to.
10 items, 20 points - Part A: write the time for 6 clocks (12 points): one o'clock, half past two, quarter past three, quarter to five, five past five, ten past six - Part B: label 4 clocks (8 points): twenty past seven, twenty-five past eight, twenty to ten, five to eleven - No options are given; the key writes each answer in full
Use at the end of a telling-time unit as a review or short check. Allow about 20 minutes. - Recap first that the minute hand on the right half means past and on the left half means to - Follow up with a pairs game: one child sets a card clock, the other asks and answers What time is it?
- Reading item 4 as quarter to four because the hour hand has not reached 5 - Using past instead of to in items 9 and 10, e.g. forty past nine - Mixing up the hands, especially in item 10 where both point near 11 - Writing twenty five without a hyphen, or a quarter past, which is also correct; set the marking rule in advance
