Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match eight toy pictures to their words, then pick the first letter of four more toys by listening to the opening sound.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Word bank A-H: teddy bear, kite, building blocks, rubber duck, doll, toy train, yo-yo and robot - Part A: match 8 pictures to the words (16 points) - Part B: look at a ball, a drum, a boat and a car and circle the first letter from three choices (4 points), e.g. d, b or p for the drum - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use early in a toys unit. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - If you have real toys, let children pick one up and name it before starting - In Part B have children say each toy's name aloud before circling, since ball, drum, boat and car are not in the word bank; follow up with What is your favourite toy?

Common sticking points

- In Part B the drum's options are d, b and p, which look alike; children still mixing up b and d often circle the wrong one - The boat is drawn as a large ship, so children may circle s for ship; tell them the intended word first - In Part A children may swap doll and teddy bear, since Thai calls both ตุ๊กตา
