Teaching guide

What children will practise

Spell 12 toy words correctly by choosing the missing letter, then pick the correct spelling from near-miss versions.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points in total - Part A: 8 missing-letter items (16 points), three letters to choose from, e.g. bo_rd game, jigs_w puzzle, marb_es, modeling cl_y, spinning t_p - Part B: pick the correct spelling in 4 items (4 points): toy airplane, rocking horse, toy scooter, toy soldier - A separate answer key shows the correct choices highlighted

How to use it in class

Use once children know the toy names and have seen them written. Allow 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, say each Part A word aloud and ask which sound is missing - After marking, have children copy any word they got wrong, or move on to the toys look-and-write sheet, which gives no letter choices

Common sticking points

- Dropping the k in rocking (roking horse) or adding a u (rocking hourse), both Part B distractors - Spelling soldier by sound: toy soljer or toy solder - Mixing up long vowels: toy scoter, toy scootor and toy airplain - Choosing o instead of a in board because of the vowel sound - toy aeroplane is a valid British English spelling and should be accepted alongside toy airplane
