Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write eight toy names from pictures unaided, then read short English clues to work out four more toys.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points in total - Part A: write the word for 8 pictures (16 points): teddy bear, board game, toy airplane, jump rope, toy train, hula hoop, rocking horse, yo-yo - Part B: read a clue and write the toy in 4 items (4 points), e.g. It is round and bounces. and It makes music when you hit it. - Part B key answers are kite, toy car, ball and toy drum

How to use it in class

Use after the toys missing-letter sheet, since this one gives no letter choices. Allow about 15 minutes. - Read the Part B clues aloud together first and check fly, wheels, bounces and hit - Follow up with a guessing game: children write their own It is... / It can... clue for a partner

Common sticking points

- Part B clue 1 (It can fly in the sky.) may be answered toy airplane, from Part A, instead of kite - Part B clue 2 (has wheels) fits toy train as well - Spelling teddy bear as tedy bare, or dropping the hyphen in yo-yo - Writing skipping rope for jump rope, which is correct British usage and should be accepted
