Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first letter of eight vehicle words, then pick the correct spelling of car, bus, train and boat from sound-spelt look-alikes.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 12 points - Part A: choose the first letter, 8 items (8 points): _ar (m/c/t), _us (b/p/r), _icycle (c/t/b), _rain (b/t/s), _irplane (a/e/i), _oat (c/m/b), _axi (d/t/p), _otorcycle (m/b/r) - Part B: choose the correct spelling, 4 items (4 points): kar / carr / car, bus / buss / buz, tran / train / trane, bote / boet / boat - A separate key circles answers in red

How to use it in class

Use after the transport matching sheet. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, play a sounds game: say /b/, /t/ or /m/ and have children point to a vehicle that starts with it - After marking, have children read the Part B distractors aloud, noticing that kar and car sound the same, and talk about why spelling must be remembered; then move on to the write-the-words sheet

Common sticking points

- Part B item 1: choosing kar because the /k/ sound suggests k - Part B item 3 trane and item 4 bote: spelling the long vowel by sound - Part B item 2: choosing buss or buz by doubling the final letter or using z for the sound - Part A item 5: choosing e or i because airplane begins with an /eə/ sound close to Thai เอ
