Before you begin
Learn common Thai opposites such as big-small, tall-low, hot-cold, heavy-light, fast-slow, open-close, in-out and before-after, then use them to match pictures, complete sentences, reverse instructions and write two opposite versions of a short scene.
20 slides in which a girl and a magic mirror explore an upside-down world - Slides 1-9, matching to pictures: find four opposite pairs in the doorway picture, link ใหญ่, สูง, เปิด, ใกล้ and ร้อน to their opposites, a tall and low tower and a big and small house, circle pictures for a door, in-out, a box and a window, sort eight objects into heavy or light (feather, balloon, rock, watermelon, pillow, bucket), day and night, fast-slow and in front-behind, many-few and full-empty, new-old and before-after - Slides 10-14, using the words: draw an opposites notebook page, write the opposites of เร็ว, เข้า, ขึ้น, เปิด and ก่อน, reverse five instructions (stand up, walk forwards, raise your hand, speak loudly, open the door), complete sentences from a word bank of มาก, น้อย, เปิด, ปิด, ใกล้, ไกล (such as please __ the door when you leave), and spot the wrong word in speech bubbles such as the ice cream is so hot - Slides 15-20, creating: draw one opposite pair, write a rainy-day and a sunny-day version, a clue game (not hot, not heavy, not fast, not near, not loud), invent new pairs, design an opposite town and a five-pair opposites dictionary - There are no answer slides
Use with Years 1-2 over three lessons of about 30-40 minutes (slides 1-9, 10-14, 15-20). - Play slide 12 as a whole-class game: you read the instruction and children do the opposite, so 'stand up' means sit down, before they write - On slides 13-14 have children read each sentence aloud both right and wrong to hear which sounds odd, and stop to discuss items with more than one possible answer, such as วันนี้นักเรียนมาโรงเรียน__กว่าทุกวัน
- Always using ต่ำ as the opposite of สูง, though for people or trees Thai usually says เตี้ย - Putting ไม่ in front of the word instead of giving an opposite, such as ไม่เร็ว for ช้า (slide 17 uses ไม่... as the clue, but the answer must be a new word) - Assuming big things are always heavy, so the pillow goes on the heavy side (slide 5) - Filling a blank without reading the whole sentence, giving บ้านของฉันอยู่ใกล้จากโรงเรียน, which is unnatural; ไกล fits
