What children will practise

Learn that a Thai consonant cluster is two initial consonants pronounced together, with ร, ล or ว as the second one, then read clusters clearly and sort words into the ร, ล and ว groups.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides told as a detective taking words to three houses - Slides 1-3: the mission and what a cluster is (two initial consonants said together, the second being ร, ล or ว) - Slides 4-7, one house each: ร clusters ครู, พริก, แปรง; ล clusters ปลา, กล้วย, คลาน; ว clusters กวาง, ขวาน, ควาย; then a worked example with ครู, ปลา and กวาง - Slides 8-15: take six words home, a warm-up with ครู, and missions 1-6 choosing ร, ล or ว for พริก, ปลา, กวาง, กล้วย, ขวาน and แปรง - Slides 16-19: drag ten words home, which word is in the same group as ปลา (กล้วย, กวาง, ครู), which is not a ร cluster (ครู, พริก, แปรง, กล้วย), and a five-word final round (ครู, ปลา, ควาย, กล้วย, ขวาน) - Slide 20: mission complete - No separate answer slides, but many slides show the answer on the page

How to use it in class

Use with Years 1-2 over one or two lessons of about 30 minutes. - Slides 9-15 show the answer on the page, so cover that corner or take answers before revealing, and have the class read each word aloud with a clear ร or ล: ครู not คู, ปลา not ปา - Pause at slides 8, 11 and 13: ร, ล and ว are the second consonant in a Thai consonant cluster, not a leading consonant. กล้วย has a ก+ล cluster, while ว belongs to the vowel อัว - Run slide 16 as a team game sticking word cards on the houses, then have each team find one more cluster word for each house

Common sticking points

- Dropping the second consonant: ครู read as คู, ปลา as ปา, แปรง as แปง - Splitting the cluster into two syllables: ครู as คะ-รู, กล้วย as กะ-ล้วย - Seeing the ว in กล้วย and calling it a ว cluster, although กล้วย is an ล cluster and its ว belongs to the vowel อัว (slide 18 uses กล้วย as the odd one out among ร clusters)
