What children will practise

Learn that a Thai final-consonant group (มาตรา) gathers words whose final consonants sound alike, and sort words into the kok, kot and kop groups by the final consonant, even when it is not literally ก, ด or บ, as in เมฆ, กระดาษ and ภาพ.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides told as a detective taking words home to three houses (plus two shop cover images) - Slides 1-3: the mission and what a final-consonant group means - Slides 4-6, the three houses: kok with finals ก ข ค ฆ (นก, เมฆ, เลข), kot with finals จ ช ซ ด ต ถ ท ธ ศ ษ ส (มด, กระดาษ, ราช), kop with finals บ ป พ ฟ ภ (รูป, ภาพ, ธูป) - Slides 7-16: a worked example and missions 1-8, one word each: นก, มด, รูป, เลข, ภาพ, กระดาษ, เมฆ, ธูป - Slides 17-19: drag six words to their houses, pick the word in the same group as นก (เมฆ, มด, รูป), and a final three-question round (โรค, ภาพ, มด) - Slide 20: a summary with นก, มด and กบ - There are no answer slides

How to use it in class

Use in Year 1 once children can sound out simple one-syllable words, over one or two lessons of about 30 minutes. - On slides 4-6 have children say each example aloud and stretch the end sound, noticing that เมฆ ends like นก, before pointing to the final letter - For missions 1-8 give each child three coloured cards matching the houses (blue, pink, yellow) to hold up together, then move on to Word Detective Part 2 (กง กน กม เกย เกอว)

Common sticking points

- Only accepting ก for kok, ด for kot and บ for kop, so refusing to place เมฆ, กระดาษ or ภาพ because their finals are ฆ, ษ and พ - Looking at the first consonant rather than the final one, so ภาพ or ธูป are misplaced because ภ or ธ catches the eye - In the final round, โรค ends in ค, a kok final, but children often guess by sound without checking the final letter
