Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Learn two kinds of Thai leading consonant: ห leading ง ญ น ม ย ร ล ว, and อ leading ย, which occurs in just four words (อย่า, อยู่, อย่าง, อยาก), then read them without sounding the ห or อ as a separate syllable and sort words into the right group.
20 slides told as a detective taking words to two houses - Slides 1-3: the mission and what a leading consonant is (two consonants at the start, the first leading the sound of the second, as in หนู and อยู่) - Slides 4-6, the ห house: cards for ง ญ น ม ย ร ล ว, then หนู, หมา, หญิง and หลาน, หวาน, หยุด - Slide 7, the อ-leading-ย house: อย่า, อยู่, อย่าง, อยาก, with a reminder to learn these four words - Slides 8-15: sort หนู, หมา, อยู่ and อยาก, a warm-up with หนู, and missions 1-6 choosing ห leading, อ leading ย or not a leading consonant for หญิง, หลาน, หวาน, อยู่, อย่าง and อยาก - Slides 16-19: take ten words home, which word belongs with อยู่ (อยาก, หมา, หนู), which is not ห leading (หนู, หมา, หลาน, อยู่), and a five-word final round (หญิง, หวาน, อย่า, อยู่, หยุด) - Slide 20: mission complete - No separate answer slides, but the mission slides already tick the answer
Use with Years 1-2 after children have met high, mid and low consonant classes, over one or two lessons of about 30 minutes. - On slides 5-6 compare pairs aloud, มา with หมา and ลาน with หลาน, so children hear that the ห is silent but changes the tone - The mission slides already tick the answer, so have children show 1, 2 or 3 fingers before you reveal; turn slide 16 into word cards to sort on the board, and practise the four อ-leading-ย words as the phrase อย่าอยู่อย่างอยาก
- Sounding the ห or อ as its own syllable: หมา as หะ-มา, อยู่ as อะ-ยู่ - Reading หมา, หลาน and หวาน in the mid tone like มา, ลาน and วาน, not realising the leading ห makes them follow high-class tone rules - Assuming any word starting with อ followed by ย is a leading consonant, though only four words are - In the which-is-not-ห question, choosing by picture or meaning rather than the first letter (slide 18, the answer is อยู่)
