Before you begin
Meet three Thai word classes, nouns (names of people, animals, things and places), verbs (actions) and วิเศษณ์ (words that describe or add detail, covering adjectives and adverbs), and sort familiar words into the right group.
20 slides told as a detective taking words to three houses - Slides 1-3: the mission and what nouns, verbs and วิเศษณ์ are - Slides 4-8, one or two slides per house: nouns เด็ก, แมว, โรงเรียน and ครู, ปลา, บ้าน; verbs กิน, วิ่ง, อ่าน and กระโดด, นอน, เขียน; describing words สวย, ใหญ่, เร็ว - Slide 9: a worked example sending แมว, วิ่ง and สวย home - Slides 10-15: missions 1-6 on โรงเรียน, กิน, ใหญ่, คุณครู, กระโดด and หวาน - Slides 16-19: sort nine words into the houses, which word is a verb like วิ่ง (กิน, แมว, สวย), which is not a noun (แมว, ครู, บ้าน, วิ่ง), and a five-word final round - Slide 20: mission complete - No separate answer slides, and every mission slide already ticks the answer
Use with Years 1-2 in one lesson of about 30-40 minutes. - Before starting, say that nouns, verbs and describing words are three of Thai's seven word classes, not the whole list - Every mission slide already ticks the answer, so have children hold up one of three coloured cards (blue noun, orange verb, pink describing word) before you show the slide, or cover the answer - After slide 16 ask children to make a short sentence with all three kinds, such as แมวตัวใหญ่วิ่งเร็ว, and let a partner name each word's class, so they see how words work in a sentence
- Assuming any word with an action picture is a verb, e.g. calling เร็ว a verb because its card shows a running boy - Putting หวาน or สวย with the nouns because the picture shows sweets or a flower, rather than seeing that the word describes - Thinking คุณครู is not a noun because it has two parts, or that nouns must be things you can touch
