What children will practise

Fill the middle vowel in five CVC words, then unscramble three letters into five more short words, practising short vowels and letter order.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: write the missing vowel, then the whole word, 5 items (10 points): p_n, m_p, l_g, c_p, v_n. Key: pen, map, log, cup, van - The short vowels e, a, o and u all appear, but not i - Section B: unscramble, 5 items (10 points): a t h, x f o, g p i, s b u, y k e. Key: hat, fox, pig, bus, key - A Let's Reflect row of faces closes the page

How to use it in class

Use once children can blend CVC words. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, chant the short vowels /æ/, /e/, /ɒ/ and /ʌ/ with actions, then have children say each Section A picture slowly to hear the middle sound - In Section B, have children name the picture before finding the first letter; afterwards, change one vowel (pen to pin, cup to cap) and read the new word

Common sticking points

- Section A item 1 pen: writing a or i, as Thai learners often blur /e/ and /æ/ - Section A item 4 cup: writing a because /ʌ/ sounds like Thai อะ - Section B: copying the letters in printed order, e.g. ath or gpi, without looking at the picture - Section B item 5 key: writing kye, as the ey ending is unfamiliar
