Teaching guide

What children will practise

Trace and copy five short words, then write five more from pictures with no model to copy.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: trace and copy 5 words (10 points): sun, kite, book, frog and cake - Section B: write the word for 5 pictures (10 points) with nothing to copy. Key: moon, bus, sock, leaf, nest - Tracing words are dotted lower-case letters - A Let's Reflect row of faces closes the page

How to use it in class

Use early in P1, once children can form all the lower-case letters. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, sky-write sun together with a finger, stressing where s and n begin - Section B is much harder than Section A; if children cannot yet spell alone, say each word slowly sound by sound (/m/ /uː/ /n/) and let them write what they hear

Common sticking points

- Section B item 1: writing mon or mun, not knowing the long oo spelling - Section B item 4: writing lef or leef instead of leaf - Section B item 3: writing sok or sox by spelling the final sound - Copying k or f without reaching the top line, as if they were short letters
