Game teaching guide

What children will practise

Put events and numbers in order: a day's routine, consecutive numbers, counting on in fives, and the steps of counting objects carefully.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a put-in-order game with 4 steps each - Wake up > go to school > go home > go to bed - 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 - Counting on in fives: 5 > 10 > 15 > 20 - Counting things: line them up > count one at a time > remember the last number > write the numeral

How to use it in class

Use early in Grade 1, 5 minutes; round 4 is a good way to teach counting before using counters. - Play as a class; for round 3, count fingers a hand at a time: five, ten, fifteen, twenty - After round 4, children count the pencils in a box following the game's steps - If many miss round 4, ask "If the things are in a heap, can we tell which ones we've counted?" - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 4, putting write the numeral before remember the last number, since they happen almost together - In round 3, swapping 15 and 20 before counting in fives is familiar - In round 1, little difficulty is expected; the routine order is clear
