What children will practise

Round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, including the exactly-halfway case, and use rounding to estimate a sum (indicator ค 1.1 ป.4/7).

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 47 to the nearest ten is 50; 32 is 30 - 250 to the nearest hundred is 300; distractors 250 and 200 - 1,234 to the nearest thousand is 1000; distractor 1200 - 89 to the nearest ten is 90 - Estimate 48 + 31: 80

How to use it in class

Use after teaching rounding with a number line, about 6 minutes, team mode, with a number line on the board. - 250 is exactly halfway; let teams discuss before revealing, then settle the rule that halfway rounds up - For 1,234, the distractor 1200 is rounding to the hundred; ask which place the question asked for - For the estimate, teams also work out the exact 79 and compare - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing 200 for 250, thinking halfway rounds down, or 250 by not rounding at all - Choosing 1200 for 1,234 by rounding to the hundred out of habit. Underline "thousand" - Choosing 45 for 47, rounding to the nearest number ending in 5
