Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Put the numbers in order from smallest to largest.

    • 0
    • 0.5
    • -2
    • 3/2
    Read the explanation

Convert them all to decimals before comparing.

  2. Put the percentages in order from smallest to largest.

    • 125%
    • 25%
    • 5%
    • 50%
    Read the explanation

    Percentages can be compared directly.

  3. Put the steps of solving an equation in order.

    • check the answer
    • collect like terms
    • divide by the coefficient
    • move the constant to the other side
    Read the explanation

Move the constant first, then deal with the coefficient.

What children will practise

Order numbers in different forms (negatives, decimals, improper fractions), order percentages past 100, put the steps for solving an equation in order, and order units of area.

What's in the worksheet

4 ordering rounds of 4 cards - Numbers smallest first: -2, 0, 0.5, 3/2 - Percentages smallest first: 5%, 25%, 50%, 125% - Steps to solve an equation: move the constant, collect like terms, divide by the coefficient, check - Units of area smallest first: square millimetre, square centimetre, square metre, square kilometre

How to use it in class

Use as a pre-test review; about 4-5 minutes. - Play in teams; for round 1 draw a number line, writing 3/2 as 1.5 - In round 4, ask what each unit would measure, e.g. a book cover, a classroom, a province - Round 3 uses words Grade 6 rarely meet (term, coefficient); explain them first or skip the round - Some items extend beyond primary indicators. Use them for discussion or preparation for Grade 7, not to judge attainment - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: 3/2 may be put before 0.5 by children who think fractions are always less than 1 - Round 3: most children cannot order it, not knowing 'term' or 'coefficient', and the keyed order is debatable - Round 2: 125% may be misplaced by children who think percentages stop at 100
