Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. What are traits passed from parents to children called?

    • inherited (genetic) traits
    • learned traits
    • traits from upbringing
    Read the explanation

Inherited traits are passed on through genes from the parents.

  2. Which of these is inherited?

    • the languages you speak
    • eye colour
    • being able to swim
    Read the explanation

Eye colour is inherited from your parents; swimming is a skill you learn.

  3. Which of these is not inherited?

    • having dimples in the cheeks
    • being able to roll the tongue
    • being able to play music
    Read the explanation

Playing an instrument comes from practice, not from your parents.

What children will practise

Inheritance: what inherited traits are, telling them from practised skills, where genes are, why children resemble both parents, and why biodiversity matters. Matches ว 1.3 ป.5/1 (traits passed from parents to offspring); the tagged ว 1.3 ป.6/1 does not exist.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with three options each - Traits passed from parents are called inherited (genetic) traits - Eye colour is inherited; being able to play music is not - Genes are on chromosomes in the nucleus - A child resembles both parents because they inherit genes from both

How to use it in class

Use it after a class survey of traits such as earlobes, dimples and hair whorls, about 5 minutes, solo. Take care with children who do not live with their birth parents or are adopted; use plant or pet examples alongside. On question 3, avoid using tongue rolling as a key example, since current research shows it is not simply inherited. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.

Common sticking points

- Question 3: choosing being able to roll the tongue because some classmates learnt to do it, which is a correct observation. Accept that tongue rolling is a poor example of inheritance. - Question 4: choosing in the blood, from the phrase สายเลือด (bloodline). Separate the idiom from biology. - Question 6: unsure how it connects, since it is a different topic. Explain that biodiversity starts from genetic differences.
