What children will practise

Practise several skills in one set: subtracting within 10, counting the corners of flat shapes, halving even numbers, and adding within 10.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - 7 - 4 with 3; 9 - 7 with 2 - Triangle with 3 corners; pentagon with 5; circle with no corners - 6 with its half, 3; 10 with 5 - 2 + 7 with 9; 4 + 6 with 10

How to use it in class

Use for Grade 1 mid-term review. About 6 minutes. - Play in teams; for round 2, children draw each shape in the air and count the corners on their fingers - For round 3, split counters into two equal piles before matching - If many miss round 1, count back on a number line, or ask what added to 4 makes 7 - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 1, matching 9 - 7 with 3 or 7 - 4 with 2 after slipping one step counting back - In round 2, not knowing the pentagon and matching by elimination; draw one first - In round 3, matching 8 with 2 by subtracting instead of halving
