What children will practise

Understand zero as the number for nothing: adding or subtracting zero changes nothing, a number minus itself is zero, and one comes after zero, in line with indicator ค 1.1 ป.1/1 on counting numbers and zero.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - 5 + 0 = 5 (50 is a distractor) - 0 + 0 = 0 - 9 - 9 = 0 (18 is a distractor) - 6 - 0 = 6 (60 is a distractor) - The number after 0 is 1

How to use it in class

Use after teaching zero. 4-5 minutes. - Before playing, use an empty plate as 0 and ask how many oranges there are after putting 5 on the empty plate - Play as a class; children give a reason after each question - If many choose 50 or 60, point out we are not writing digits side by side but combining amounts - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In questions 1 and 5, choosing 50 and 60 by writing the digits side by side instead of adding or subtracting - In question 3, choosing 18 by adding instead of subtracting when the two numbers match - In question 4, choosing 1 because we start counting at one, and counting numbers do start at 1
