What children will practise

Read short word problems and decide from the wording whether to add, subtract or multiply, using cues such as "given away", "altogether", "fly away" and "each", then find the answer. The focus is addition and subtraction (indicator ค 1.1 ป.2/4), with two multiplication items.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 24 pencils, 8 given away, 16 left - 18 boys and 17 girls, 35 altogether - 15 birds, 6 fly away, 9 left - Saving 10 baht a day for 7 days makes 70 baht - Three notebooks at 12 baht each cost 36 baht

How to use it in class

Use once addition, subtraction and multiplication are taught, 7-8 minutes. Read each problem aloud together before answering, since some P2 readers are still slow. - Before answering, pupils show with fingers whether it needs adding, subtracting or multiplying - If many miss three notebooks at 12 baht, draw three books and write 12 under each - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- For three notebooks at 12 baht, choosing 42 or adding 12 + 3 = 15, not seeing it as multiplication. Draw it - For 18 boys and 17 girls, choosing 34 or 36 from a carrying slip - For 24 pencils with 8 given away, choosing 14 or 18 from a borrowing slip
