A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
One, two, three, four, six and twelve - six in all.
Eleven divides only by one and itself, so it is prime.
Nine divides by three, so it has more than two factors.
Before you play
Find factors of a number, identify primes, and find the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of small numbers, extending multiplication and division and laying groundwork for finding the HCF, which the curriculum places in P6 (indicator ค 1.1 ป.6/4).
6 multiple-choice questions - 12 has 6 factors - 11 is prime; 9 is not - The smallest prime is 2; distractor 1 - The HCF of 8 and 12 is 4 - The LCM of 4 and 6 is 12; distractor 24
Use as a stretch activity for a class secure in times tables, about 8 minutes, team mode, with teams listing factors or multiples on paper. - For the factors of 12, have teams arrange 12 cubes into every possible rectangle - For the smallest prime, discuss why 1 is not counted as prime - HCF and LCM are usually taught in a later grade; if pupils have not met them, skip or demonstrate first - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Choosing 4 for the number of factors of 12 by forgetting 1 and 12, or 12 by assuming a number has as many factors as itself - Choosing 1 as the smallest prime. Stress that a prime has exactly two factors - Choosing 24 for the LCM of 4 and 6 by just multiplying. List multiples of 4 and 6 side by side and find the first match
