Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. A parallelogram with base 10 and height 6 - what is its area?

    • 60
    • 16
    • 30
    Read the explanation

A parallelogram's area is base times height: ten times six is sixty.

  2. A trapezium with parallel sides 6 and 10 and height 4 - what is its area?

    • 40
    • 32
    • 64
    Read the explanation

Add the parallel sides, multiply by the height, halve it: sixteen times four is sixty-four, halved is thirty-two.

  3. The area of a circle of radius 7, taking pi as 22/7?

    • 49
    • 44
    • 154
    Read the explanation

Pi times the radius squared: 22/7 times forty-nine is one hundred and fifty-four.

What children will practise

Find the area of parallelograms, trapeziums, triangles and circles (pi as 22/7), go from a square's area to its perimeter, and know that area is in square units, following ค 2.1 ป.6/2 and ป.6/3.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - Parallelogram, base 10, height 6 (60) - Trapezium with parallel sides 6 and 10, height 4 (32) - Circle of radius 7 with pi as 22/7 (154) - A square of area 100: its perimeter (40) - How units of area are written (square metre)

How to use it in class

Use as a formula review before polygon area problems; about 6-8 minutes. - Play in teams with all the formulas written in a corner of the board - If many miss Q2, join two paper trapeziums into a parallelogram to show where the halving comes from - Q5 has two steps, side then perimeter; have teams say both - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q1: halving the parallelogram as if it were a triangle gives 30 - Q2: forgetting to halve gives 64 - Q3: using 2 × radius instead of radius squared gives 44, the circumference - Q5: stopping at the side length of 10, or answering 100
