What children will practise

Evaluate powers (2 to the 3rd, 3 to the 2nd, 10 to the 3rd) and the square root of 81, stressing that a power means repeated multiplication, not multiplying by the exponent.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - 2 to the power 3 (8) - 3 to the power 2 (9) - 5 to the power 2 (25) - 10 to the power 3 (1000) - Square root of 81 (9)

How to use it in class

Use to introduce powers in a class ready to go beyond the syllabus, or as enrichment; about 4-5 minutes. - Play as a class on the projector; after Q1 write 2 × 2 × 2 on the board to show repeated multiplication - If many miss Q1 or Q3, point out that the distractors 6 and 10 come from multiplying base by exponent - Link Q5 back to squaring: 9 × 9 = 81 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q1: 2 × 3 = 6, which is offered - Q3: 5 × 2 = 10, which is offered - Q4: 30 from 10 × 3, or 300 from miscounting zeros - Q6: 8 from 4 × 2
