What children will practise

Add and subtract positive and negative integers by moving along a number line, compare negative numbers, and apply this to temperature.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - -3 + 5 (2) - 4 - 7 (-3) - -2 - 3 (-5) - Smallest of -2, -9 and -5 (-9) - -5 degrees rising by 8 (3)

How to use it in class

Use as enrichment after introducing negatives with a thermometer or basement lift floors; about 5 minutes. - Put a -10 to 10 number line on the board or floor and have a team member walk it before answering - If many miss Q5, ask which is colder, minus 9 or minus 2 degrees - Use a thermometer picture for Q6 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q5: choosing -2 because 2 is smaller than 9 - Q2: answering 3 by subtracting the smaller from the larger - Q3: -1 from thinking the two minuses cancel - Q6: 13 from 5 + 8, ignoring the minus sign
