Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Learn the main organs and what they do (brain, heart, lungs, stomach, bones, muscles, kidneys), the five senses, the path of food and of urine through the body, and how to stay healthy: balanced food, exercise, enough sleep, handwashing and avoiding dangers.
20 slides (follow the page number in the bottom-right corner); two children and a friendly cell tour Body City - Pages 1-7, organs and senses: a map of Body City (brain, heart, lungs, stomach, muscles, bones), the five senses, eyes and eye care, the ear (outer ear, eardrum, three ear bones, cochlea), nose and tongue (sweet, salty, sour, bitter), and skin (hot, cold, soft, hard, pain) - Pages 8-13, body systems: the heart pumps blood carrying oxygen and food (feel your heartbeat), the lungs and breathing in and out, the journey of food from mouth to oesophagus, stomach and intestines, kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, bones and muscles (skull, ribs, joints, contracting and relaxing), and the brain and nerves - Pages 14-17, staying healthy: five food groups, exercise, sleep and water, daily hygiene (wash hands for 20 seconds, brush teeth morning and night), and things to avoid (sharp objects, medicines and chemicals, cigarette smoke, too many sweets, too much screen time) - Pages 18-20: match five organs to their jobs, a review with four multiple-choice questions, and a certificate - There are no answer slides
Use in a Year 1-3 'our bodies' unit over three or four lessons of about 30 minutes; the content is dense, so do not run it in one go. - On pages 8 and 9 make it physical: feel the heartbeat before and after 20 jumps, and take three slow breaths together - Pair pages 3-7 with the body and senses worksheet, and pages 14-17 with the food and nutrition worksheet or the health and body care worksheet
- Thinking the heart sits far on the left side, or that it is shaped like a heart symbol - Thinking food stops in the tummy, not knowing it passes through the stomach and intestines (page 10 asks children to order the route) - Mixing up organs and jobs, e.g. the stomach helps us breathe or the brain pumps blood (page 19 uses distractors like these) - Thinking muscles push bones, when muscles work by contracting and pulling
