Teaching guide

What children will practise

Spell eight animal names such as tiger, giraffe, dolphin, crocodile and rabbit by adding the missing letter, then tell the correct spelling from versions with letters swapped or missing.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: add the missing letter in 8 words (16 points): ti_er, gir_ffe, zebr_, pa_da, dol_hin, crocod_le, fro_ and rabb_t, from three letters each - dol_hin offers P, B and F, where F sounds the same as ph - Part B: choose the correct spelling in 4 items (4 points): tigre / tiger / tigr, giraffe / girafe / girrafe, zebar / zebr / zebra, rabit / rabbit / rabbitt - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after the animal matching sheet, once children know the names but spell them unreliably. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, clap the syllables in gi-raffe, cro-co-dile and rab-bit and point out the double letters - After marking, write deliberate misspellings such as girafe on the board and let children spot the error

Common sticking points

- dol_hin: choosing F for the /f/ sound, not knowing dolphin uses ph - Part B: choosing girafe or girrafe, unsure whether the double letter is ff or rr - Part B: choosing rabit because only one b is heard - Choosing tigre or zebar, where the final letters are swapped but all present
