Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Copy eight animal names (fox, crab, deer, goat, kangaroo, duck, bear and chicken) from a word bank under the right pictures, then choose the correct first letter.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: bear, chicken, crab, deer, duck, fox, goat and kangaroo - Part A: write the full word under 8 pictures (16 points), in a different order from the bank - Part B: choose the first letter in 4 items (4 points): _ox (F/B/V), _rab (G/C/K), _eer (T/P/D) and _oat (G/J/C) - A separate answer key, whose word bank shows a picture for every word

How to use it in class

Use after the animal spelling sheet, to practise writing whole words with a word bank for support. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, read the bank aloud together and act out each animal: hop like a kangaroo, walk sideways like a crab - After marking, have children sort the eight animals into farm and wild, then say A goat lives on a farm.

Common sticking points

- Part B _rab: choosing K, since it makes the same /k/ sound as C - Part B _ox: choosing V, because many Thai learners pronounce f and v alike - Dropping an o from kangaroo (kangaro) or the c from chicken (chiken) - Item 3: children may not know deer and write reindeer or pick another word
