Teaching guide

What children will practise

Match eight body-part pictures to a lettered word bank, then pick the first letter of hand, eye, nose and leg.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: ear, leg, mouth, hand, nose, head, arm, eye - Part A: write the letter for 8 pictures (16 points), including a hand, an eye, a boy's head and a bent arm - Part B: choose the missing first letter in _and, _ye, _ose and _eg from three options (4 points) - Key: Part A reads D H F B E G A C; Part B reads H E N L

How to use it in class

Use early in a body-parts unit, after a song or a pointing game. Allow about 10 minutes. - Play Touch your ... first so children feel the difference between hand and arm, and head and face - In Part B, have children say each whole word aloud before circling, then move on to a spelling or writing sheet on the same topic

Common sticking points

- Choosing I or A for _ye, because eye sounds like the letter I but starts with E - Choosing M instead of N for _ose, as the two nasal sounds are close - Picture 4 shows a lower leg with a foot, so some children look for foot, which is not in the bank - Swapping hand (item 1) and arm (item 6)
