Before you begin
Recognise 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht coins and 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 baht notes, count and total money, compare amounts, decide whether there is enough to buy something, add two prices and work out change.
20 slides - Slides 2-5, knowing money: 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht coins, the five banknotes and their colours, more, less or equal (5 and 10 baht, 20 and 50 baht, 10 and 10 baht), ordering 1, 5, 10 and 20 baht coins from least to most - Slides 6-10, totalling: which set makes 10 baht (5+5, 2+2+2+2+2, 10, 5+2+1), whose purse holds more and by how much, matching amounts, how much more is needed (7 to 10, 15 to 20, 18 to 20), and a four-step review - Slides 11-17, buying and selling: a toy shop priced 5-20 baht, is there enough money in four cases, adding two prices at a stationery stall and a sweet stall, money left (30-12, 40-15, 50-28, 25-9), change from 50 baht (prices 35, 27, 18, 42), and which bundle fits a 40-baht budget - Slides 18-20: spot the trader's mistakes in five true or false items (such as a 12-baht item, paid 20, change 3), a four-part final round and three bonus questions - There are no answer slides
Use for a Year 1-2 money unit over three lessons of about 30 minutes (slides 1-10 knowing and totalling money, 11-17 buying and selling, 18-20 review). - Give pairs of children play coins and notes; at slides 6, 9 and 16 have them lay the money out before answering, which helps children who cannot yet count from a picture - End the second lesson with a classroom shop role-play, then set the shopping and change worksheet or the Thai coins and notes worksheet
- Counting coins instead of their value, e.g. thinking one 5-baht coin is less than three 1-baht coins - Assuming any handful of coins makes 10 baht without adding (set D on slide 6, 5+2+1, makes only 8) - Adding instead of subtracting for change: paying 50 for a 35-baht item and answering 85 - Saying there is enough money because the amount and the price look close (slide 12: 20 baht for an 18-baht notebook, but 30 baht for a 35-baht teddy)
