Teaching guide

What children will practise

Spell eight colour words by choosing the missing letter with no picture support, then look at paint splashes to pick the correct spelling of pink, brown, gray and orange.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: circle the missing letter in 8 colour words (16 points): p_nk, br_wn, gra_, b_ue, or_nge, y_llow, pur_le, gre_n - Part B: look at a paint splash and choose the correct spelling (4 points): pnki / pink / pikn, brown / brawn / broun, grai / grea / gray, orenge / orange / orangee - Part A key reads I O Y L A E P E

How to use it in class

Use once children name colours confidently, as Part A shows no colour cues. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, hold up crayons one by one and have children spell each colour aloud - The sheet uses the American spelling gray. When children write rather than choose, accept the British spelling grey as correct too - After marking, have children colour a small dot beside each Part A word in that colour to link word and colour

Common sticking points

- Choosing R instead of L in b_ue, as Thai learners often swap r and l - Choosing B in pur_le, since p and b sound close - Choosing brawn or broun in Part B, spelling the /aʊ/ sound by ear - Choosing orenge in Part B, as the second vowel is unstressed
