Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at everyday objects such as grapes, a strawberry and a carrot and write their colour from an eight-word bank, then choose the first letter of red, blue, green and yellow.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, pink, brown - Part A: write the colour of 8 objects (16 points): grapes, a strawberry, a banana, a fish, a flower, a frog, a teddy bear and a carrot - Part B: choose the first letter for _ed, _lue, _reen and _ellow (4 points), shown as an apple, a balloon, a leaf and the sun - Key: Part A is purple, red, yellow, blue, pink, green, brown, orange; Part B is R B G Y

How to use it in class

Use after all eight colours have been taught and children are starting to write words. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, ask What colour is the banana? and have children answer It's yellow. - After marking, have children find something in the classroom matching each picture's colour and say the object and colour together

Common sticking points

- Writing the object name in Part A, e.g. grapes or frog, instead of the colour - Writing the bank letter A-H instead of the word, out of habit from matching sheets - Choosing P instead of B for _lue, as the sounds are close - Dropping or swapping letters when copying, e.g. yelow, purpel
