What children will practise

Choose the comparative form in ... than ... sentences from a base, comparative and superlative set such as big / bigger / biggest, using a picture that compares two things.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Sentences such as An elephant is ___ than a mouse., A turtle is ___ than a rabbit. and Today is ___ than yesterday. - Answers: bigger, taller, faster (twice), slower, stronger, heavier, sweeter, colder and longer - Every item offers the base, comparative and superlative of one adjective, in varying order - A separate answer key writes each answer under the picture

How to use it in class

Use as the first comparatives sheet, after teaching -er and than. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, hold up two real objects, such as a long and a short pencil, and have children say This pencil is longer than that pencil. - After marking, ask children to point out the superlative in each item and say when it would be used

Common sticking points

- Choosing the superlative, e.g. tallest or strongest, assuming the longer word means more - Choosing the base form, e.g. big or slow, missing the than after the gap - Item 7: heavyer is not offered here, but it is the usual spelling slip when children write the word themselves
