What children will practise

Use the five senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, hands) to observe things, choose describing words for colour, shape, size, texture, smell, taste, sound and feeling, then use them in sentences that let a reader picture the thing clearly.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides (follow the page number in the bottom-right corner); Prim and the robot Mochi lead a five-senses lab - Pages 1-8, observing with the senses: choose a starting station; write the colour and shape of a ball, star, gift box, leaf and crayon; five feely boxes with a word bank (นุ่ม, แข็ง, หยาบ, เรียบ, ลื่น, สาก, ขรุขระ, ยืดหยุ่น); a tasting table (lime, sweets, salt, dark chocolate, ripe mango) with หวาน, เปรี้ยว, เค็ม, ขม; smells of flowers, soap, fruit and a bin with หอม, สดชื่น, ฉุน, เหม็น; order birdsong, rain, a bell, a drum and a car horn from quiet to loud; texture words for bark, silk, glass, fur, knitting and rock; describe a watermelon several ways - Pages 9-14, using the words: cross out the odd word (pillow: นุ่ม เบา หวาน), an object ID card, fill gaps such as แมวตัวนี้ขน__ and ฝนวันนี้ตก__, three sentences about a fish kite, change the word for a bright or stormy sky and a tidy or messy bedroom, and fix wrong descriptions such as a soft rock or hot ice - Pages 15-20, writing: build sentences from a word bag, describe something for a partner to draw, a guess-what-I-am riddle, feeling words (happy, sad, startled, sleepy) with a reason, a 3-5 sentence notebook page, and a museum of five favourite words - There are no answer slides

How to use it in class

Use with Years 1-2 in a describing-words unit over three lessons of about 40 minutes (pages 1-8, 9-14, 15-20). - For the first lesson bring real things (a lime, salt, soap, silk, a rock) in boxes so children can touch, smell and taste them on pages 3-7 before writing, since the slides only show pictures - Do pages 16-17 in pairs: one writes the description or clues and the other draws or guesses; if the partner cannot, add one more describing word and try again

Common sticking points

- Writing the name of a thing or an action instead of a describing word, such as ดอกไม้ instead of หอม, or ตี instead of ดัง - Using a word from the wrong sense, such as a loud lime or a fragrant drum (page 9 uses these as distractors) - Choosing a word that contradicts the picture, such as a soft rock or hot ice (page 14 asks children to spot and fix these) - Ordering sounds by the size of the object rather than how loud it is
