Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write eight family words from pictures using a word bank, then pick the correct first letter of four of them.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Word bank of 8 words: brother, sister, uncle, aunt, cousin, son, daughter and grandparents - Part A: write the word under each of 8 pictures (16 points) - Part B: choose the missing first letter in 4 words (4 points), e.g. _rother from B, F or P and _unt from A, O or E - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use once family words have been taught with a family tree. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Draw a family tree on the board first and point out who is whose son, brother or cousin, because the boys on the sheet look very alike - Let less confident writers start with Part B, then return to Part A

Common sticking points

- In Part B children may choose O instead of A for aunt, or A instead of U for uncle, because the opening vowel sounds are close - daughter often loses its gh or is written daugther - son, brother and cousin use very similar boy pictures, so a child may write a sensible word that differs from the key; decide the marking rule beforehand - The final s of grandparents is often dropped
