Before you begin
Practise spelling ten food and drink words by picking the missing letter from three, with a focus on vowel sounds that can be written more than one way.
10 items, 20 points - Pick the missing letter from three: sand_ich, noo_les, sal_d, ch_cken, che_se, cere_l, te_, lemon_de, cook_e, ice cr_am - Eight gaps are vowels; two are consonants (the w in sandwich and the d in noodles) - Only two items are drinks, tea and lemonade; the rest are food - A separate answer key shades the correct circle green
Use once children can say these foods but still struggle to write them. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, read each word slowly and ask which sound is hard to hear, such as the almost silent w in sandwich - After marking, play café: each child copies three favourite words from the sheet onto a menu and orders from a partner with I'd like ..., please.
- Choosing v for w in item 1 (sandvich), as many Thai learners blur the two sounds - Choosing t for d in item 2 (nootles) - The ee sound has several spellings, so children slip in ch_cken (picking e), che_se (picking a) and cook_e (picking e) - Picking e or o in items 6 and 8, where the unstressed vowel is hard to hear, though both answers are a (cereal, lemonade)
