Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write the English word for ten pictures of food, fruit and vegetables, without a word bank.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points (2 per picture) - Fruit: avocado, cherries, peach, orange, strawberry - Food and vegetables: fish, meat, sausage, eggplant - Coffee is the only drink pictured - The key gives one answer per picture

How to use it in class

Use once the words have been taught with picture cards. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before writing, ask children to sort the pictures aloud into fruit and other food - Follow up with a quick I like ... / I don't like ... speaking round using the ten words

Common sticking points

- Item 4 shows a steak, so steak or beef are reasonable, but the key accepts only meat; agree the marking rule first - Writing cherry for item 2, although two are pictured and the key has cherries - Leaving out one r in strawberry - Spelling sausage as sausige or sosage - aubergine is an acceptable British English name for eggplant
