Teaching guide

What children will practise

Learn that an ecosystem is living and non-living things interacting in one place, tell producers (plants that make their own food) from consumers (herbivores, carnivores and omnivores), build food chains that always start with a producer, and explain how losing one living thing affects the others.

What's in the worksheet

20 slides exploring a forest with Fah, Mek and an owl guide - Slides 1-3, ecosystems: living things (plants, animals, fungi) and non-living things (water, soil, sunlight, air) with ten pictures to circle or cross, and how they depend on each other (rabbit eats grass, deer drinks water, bird nests in a tree) - Slides 4-10, producers and consumers: plants make food from sunlight, water and air (tick the producers among grass, tree, rabbit, mushroom, rock), six forest producers, three kinds of consumer, herbivores (rabbit, deer, caterpillar, elephant), carnivores (tiger, snake, owl, hawk), omnivores (bear, monkey, chicken, wild boar), and a ten-picture producer or consumer sort - Slides 11-14, food chains: grass, grasshopper, frog, snake, hawk (first, second and third consumers); three forest chains (grass-deer-tiger, leaf-caterpillar-bird-snake, fruit-monkey-leopard); predators and prey; and what happens if the frogs disappear (more grasshoppers, less grass, fewer snakes) - Slides 15-20: relationships such as bee and flower or bird and tree, food and homes for deer, monkey, frog and owl, order three chains, build your own chain, four A-B-C questions and a certificate - There are no answer slides

How to use it in class

Use in a Grade 5 ecosystems unit (indicator ว 1.1 ป.5/3), or as a preview before Grade 5, over three lessons of about 30-40 minutes (slides 1-10, 11-14, 15-20). - Turn the pictures on slides 10 and 18 into cards, give one to each child and have them stand in a food-chain line at the front, then ask who must always stand first - On slide 14 ask the child holding the frog card to sit down and let the others say how they are affected, then follow up with the animals and habitats worksheet or the environment around us worksheet

Common sticking points

- Drawing arrows the wrong way, from the eater to its food, when arrows go from what is eaten to the eater (the slide 17 memory aid says arrows point from food to eater) - Thinking mushrooms are plants and therefore producers (slide 4 uses a mushroom as a distractor) - Starting a food chain with a big animal, or leaving out the producer at the start - Thinking the forest is better off without predators because nothing gets eaten (slides 13-14 show the balance breaking)
