Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read two-line dialogues and choose the greeting or goodbye that fits the situation and the time of day.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Read A's line and circle B's reply from two options, e.g. A: Good morning, Mia. / A: Bye, Dad! / A: It is bedtime. - Answers include Hello!, Hi!, Good morning!, Good afternoon!, Good evening!, Good night!, Bye!, See you! and Goodbye! - A Let's reflect box asks children to colour a face (not scored) - A separate answer key ticks each answer

How to use it in class

Use early in the year or at the start of a greetings unit, after teaching time-of-day greetings. Allow about 10 minutes. - Ask children to look at each picture first and say whether it is morning, afternoon, evening or night - After marking, pairs read the A and B lines aloud, waving on hello and on goodbye

Common sticking points

- Using Good night! as an evening greeting, when it is only said at parting or bedtime (a distractor in items 1 and 10) - Answering Good morning! to Time to go home. in item 9, missing that it is a goodbye - Replying to a goodbye with a greeting in items 3 and 7 (Hello!, Good afternoon!) - Answering Hello, Sam! with Goodbye! in item 6
