Teaching guide

What children will practise

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: circle A, B or C to complete one- or two-line dialogues, e.g. Hello! My name __ Mali. / __ are you? I am seven. / I am May. What is __ name? - Three items test be (is, am, am), two test question words (How old, What) and two the reply Nice to meet you, too. - The key reads C B A B C A B C A B - A Let's reflect box asks children to colour a face (not scored)

How to use it in class

Use in the first week of the year or at the start of an introductions unit, after practising My name is ... / I am ... years old. aloud. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, introduce yourself using the sheet's sentences, then ask two or three children What is your name? / How old are you? - After marking, children walk round and greet three classmates, chaining items 2, 3, 4 and 5 into one conversation

Common sticking points

- Item 1: choosing am because I am is familiar, though the subject is My name and needs is - Item 7: choosing you instead of your in What is __ name? - Item 4: picking What instead of How old by not checking the answer I am seven. - Items 3 and 8: choosing Goodbye., treating the reply as a way to end the chat
